Seventeen years after the genocide, Rwanda remains a divided society. The destruction of Rwanda social cohesion is characterized by mistrust among various sectors of society.
The prevailing lack of trust is one of the most dramatic consequences of the genocide. Tremendous efforts have been made by the government to develop the country and foster reconciliation.
Yet, a long-term engagement is still needed to address issues, such as dealing with the past, strengthening the rule of law promoting democracy and reinforcing social cohesion, if Rwanda is to move forward in its socio-economic development and to consolidate peace.
