Does equality in peace matter? An examination of the role of inequality in peacebuilding

Does equality in peace matter?

An examination of the role of inequality in peacebuilding

The Kofi Annan Foundation and Interpeace are proud to take part in the 2019 edition of the European Development Days (EDD). Organized by the European Commission, the EDD brings the development community together each year to share ideas and experiences in ways that inspire new partnerships and innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.

Inequality is a critical obstacle to the construction of peaceful, inclusive, and resilient societies. However, the mechanism behind this, especially in low-income or post-conflict states, has not been thoroughly examined. The Kofi Annan Foundation and Interpeace will co-host a session: ‘Does Equality in Peace Matter?’ during the EDD 2019, being held in Brussels that will begin to address these issues. The panel event will take place on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 - 14:45 to 16:00.

Via a panel discussion, the speakers will present and discuss the findings of the recently published report: ‘Challenging the Conventional: Making Post-Violence Reconciliation Succeed.’ Made possible with the support of the Government of Finland and the Robert Bosch Foundation, the report examines some of the difficulties and dilemmas societies, and the international community have encountered throughout reconciliation processes.

During the session, the panel will use the findings of the report, based on four case studies in Guatemala, Northern Ireland, DRC and South Africa and experts’ inputs, to analyze processes of reconciliation and how inequalities within these processes lead to failures of peacebuilding.
