Background
The peacebuilding, development, human rights, and humanitarian sectors are facing a rapidly changing landscape. Violent conflict, protracted crises, and multidimensional fragility, coupled with the rolling back of international norms, and a crisis of multilateralism, lie at the core of these geopolitical shifts. Deep reflection and quick adaptation to new ways of thinking and working are necessary. A key element is the need to rethink and reshape relationships between ‘insiders’ and ‘outsiders’, as well as between international, national, regional and local stakeholders. Interpeace’s Effective Advising in Complex Contexts Course (EAC) is a professional development program which sits at the heart of these trends and debates.
The objective of the course is to equip experts and advisors with tools and approaches that will help them work effectively in complex and unpredictable environments. Designed to treat “advising” as a professional skillset that can be honed and finetuned, the EAC focuses on the personal and relational dimensions of advising to reinforce participants’ ability to identify and foster opportunities for change.
The course guides participants to reflect on their individual roles, their effectiveness as advisors, and to analyse their own perception of how change happens within shifting power dynamics. Designed with an interactive and practice-oriented methodology, the course provides a space for professionals to reflect on their personal professional practice and behaviours, take a fresh look at advisory challenges they face and tackle these more consciously and creatively using practical frameworks.
In practice, the course consists of a five-day workshop complemented by three live online sessions (pre- and post-course) and supplemented by background reading and individual preparation. The training team guides ~20 participants from around the world to take a step back from their day-to-day work environments to have a fresh view on how they work and relate to others and extend their professional repertoire. The Role
The EAC team is looking for a talented mid-career facilitator to complement the training team, with an ambition to diversify the team's composition and strengthen its global and regional profile and outreach in the coming years.
The EAC has been carefully and incrementally developed over more than a decade and 15 editions, with the strong support of Interpeace and the Swiss FDFA. In 2026, another face-to-face global edition will take place 22–27 November in Switzerland.
This consultancy will be an onboarding process for an experienced co-facilitator who will join the team of facilitators. As such it offers an opportunity to engage with the course content and methodology (through direct participation in the 2026 course), and to test the personal and institutional fit of the successful applicant within the existing training team, with a view to broader collaboration in future editions, based on availability of funding.
Given the course's focus on the personal and relational dimensions of advising, we are looking for someone who is attuned to inter- and intra-personal dynamics, with a genuine interest in personal development, and who can hold a group through complex processes and scenarios - and who thoroughly enjoys facilitation.
Duties and responsibilities
Consultancy terms
This engagement is offered as a consultancy contract, comprising 6 days of work between September and December 2026, covering course participation, preparation, and post-course debrief. Beyond consultancy days, budget is available for accommodation during the week, and international travel. At the end of the consultancy, we will mutually discuss perspectives and prospects for the coming years.
