Mali Self-Portrait on screen in Bamako

The Institut Malien de Recherche Action pour la Paix (IMRAP), in partnership with the Malian Ministry of Reconciliation, screened its documentary film of the Self-Portrait on obstacles to peace in Bamako, Mali on 9 July, followed by a live debate among the public. Hosted by the Institut Français and supported by the Danish Embassy and the European Union, this event was a real success, drawing over 150 attendees. Amongst these participants were four Ministers, the President of the Supreme Court, the Mediator of the Republic, as well as the Ambassadors of Denmark and the European Union. A unique debate took place, where high State authorities spoke with open-heart on the Priorities for Peace in Mali today with the rest of audience.

The screening and live debate also elicited the interest of national media, including the ORTM, the leading television channel in Mali. Present at the event, the ORTM highlighted the importance of the participatory research carried out for the Self-Portrait, interviewing both Anne Moltès, Interpeace Acting Regional Director for West Africa, and Oumar Sako, Chairman of the Board of IMRAP. The Self-portrait of Mali, consisting of the report and the film, is the result of an inclusive and participatory research process conducted over 18 months in all 8 regions of Mali as well as refugee camps in Mauritania and Niger. This research put more than 5,000 Malians at the heart of the discussions to identify the obstacles to peace and priorities for peace in Mali. It represents a first step towards the restoration of trust and the development and implementation of sustainable solutions for peace and reconciliation in Mali, through the fostering of a culture of dialogue and Participatory Action Research.

Le 9 juillet, l’Institut Malien de Recherche Action pour la Paix (IMRAP), en partenariat avec le Ministère de la Réconciliation Nationale, a projeté le film documentaire de l’Autoportrait du Mali sur les obstacles à la paix, à Bamako, au Mali. La projection a été suivie d’un débat au sein du public. Organisé dans les locaux de l’Institut Français avec le soutien des ambassades du Danemark et de l’Union européenne, cet événement a été un véritable succès, attirant plus de 150 participants. Parmi eux se trouvaient quatre ministres, le Président de la Cour suprême, le Médiateur de la République, ainsi que les ambassadeurs du Danemark et de l’Union européenne. Le débat fut une occasion unique, par laquelle  les autorités de l’État ont parlé à cœur ouvert avec le public des priorités pour la paix au Mali.

La projection et le débat one également suscité l’intérêt des médias nationaux, y compris de l’ORTM, la principale chaîne de télévision au Mali. Présent à l’événement, l’ORTM a souligné l’importance de la recherche participative qui a mené à l’Autoportrait, interviewant Anne Moltès, Directrice par intérim du bureau régional d’Interpeace pour l’Afrique de l’Ouest, et Oumar Sako, Président du conseil d’administration de l’IMRAP. L’Autoportrait du Mali, comprenant le rapport et le film, est le résultat d’un processus de recherche inclusive et participative menée durant 18 mois dans les 8 régions du Mali, ainsi que dans les camps de réfugiés en Mauritanie et au Niger. Cette recherche a placé plus de 5000 maliens au cœur des discussions pour identifier les obstacles à la paix et les priorités pour la paix au Mali. D’une part, elle constitue une première étape vers la restauration de la confiance au Mali. De l’autre, elle va contribuer au développement et à la mise en œuvre de solutions durables pour la paix et la réconciliation, notamment à travers la promotion d’une culture de dialogue et de recherche-action participative.
