Youth gang programme launches in Latin America
August 1, 2008
Interpeace launched a programme to address the youth gangs phenomenon in August. With adequate funding now ensured the programme is scheduled to span from August 2008 till June 2010.
In view of the growing threat of youth gang related violence, the overall goal of the programme is to contribute to strengthening democratic institutions in Central America. The specific focus will be on Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. The programme will include specific actions in each country and a regional initiative.
Using the Interpeace participatory methodology, the programme will promote an integrated approach to addressing the youth gang problem. It will support the collaboration amongst all actors involved to develop public policies, action plans and a regional strategy. This seeks to address the growing problem of youth gangs which risks to be seriously exacerbated by the current economic downturn.
