Voices of the People: Understanding Challenges to Peace and Sources of Resilience in Laikipia County

This research highlights the main causes of conflict and key resilience factors in Laikipia, as identified by local communities. By amplifying community voices and reflecting their lived experiences, it provides a deeper understanding of the multidimensional nature of conflict in the region. It identifies key factors, including socio-economic inequalities, cultural norms and practices, land settlement and migration, insecurity and injustice, weak governance and political dynamics, as well as environmental stresses and shocks. Each of these factors contributes uniquely to the complexity of the conflict landscape. Addressing conflict in Laikipia requires more than piecemeal interventions. The issues identified call for inclusive engagement of all stakeholders, local communities, state institutions, and non-state actors. Critical pathways to sustainable peace and development include equitable land reforms, fair resource distribution, accountable governance, improved security, and adaptive responses to environmental change. By centring the perspectives of those most affected, this research lays a foundation for more responsive and sustainable solutions. It underscores the importance of community-driven approaches and collective action in shaping a more peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous future for Laikipia.
