His impressive intellect and eloquence helped others understand the complex challenges that Guinea-Bissau continues to face. His regular radio programme made him a celebrity at the local level all around the country and a reassuring voice of peace. In so many ways, he and his colleagues were truly Voz di Paz [Voice of Peace]."

Scott M. Weber, Director-General of Interpeace

With the passing of Fafali Flavien Koudawo, Director of Interpeace's partner organization Voz di Paz in Guinea-Bissau, the Interpeace family has lost a devoted peacebuilder and inspiring colleague.

His lifetime hope was to witness that Bissau-Guinean society could determine its own future, using education and peace as driving forces. In light of recurrent military coups and the devastating civil war from 1998-1999, Fafali supported the creation of Voz di Paz (Voice of Peace) in 2007 hoping to accompany Bissau-Guinean society to identify the root causes of the conflict and create its own way towards a better future. He employed his skills as a social science researcher and as a facilitator of dialogue to design participatory research processes that involved over 6,000 Bissau-Guineans to identify the underlying causes of conflict. "Once you've lived through a war, you don't want to go through it again," Fafali explained the motivations for his work. He tirelessly worked for peace because to him, "peace [was] like a straw hut, easy to put up, but requires high maintenance to keep it standing."

While originally from Togo, Fafali came to Guinea-Bissau as a United Nations Volunteers Programme Officer in 1990. When asked why he chose Guinea-Bissau as his new home, he answered that he "felt drawn to a country that was ill-equipped and faced many challenges. But more than that I could make a positive difference by putting my services and skills to better this impoverished war-torn country."

He wanted to give back to Bissau-Guineans what he learned over the years and especially during his studies at the renowned Graduate Institute in Geneva. In 2003, after obtaining his PhD, he co-founded the University Colinas de Boé in Bissau. He was the Dean of the Department of Political Science and History and frequently taught courses there.

Beyond the academic environment, Fafali was dedicated to helping Bissau-Guineans understand the complex challenges of peace in their society. Always full of ideas, he was among others at the origin of 'Guiné Terra Di Paz' (Guinea Land of Peace), an initiative launched on the International Day of Peace, 21 September 2011 aimed at collecting signatures from Bissau-Guineans to support the establishment of a Bissau-Guinean Day of Peace (500,000 signatures collected). Since 2012, Fafali and Voz di Paz have been mobilizing for a new social contract founded on a consensual vision of the desired future for Guinea-Bissau. This vision remains alive in the hearts of many in the country and advocates for a reform process as a condition for lasting stabilization of the country. The vision also includes the launch of a true national reconciliation process based on truth, justice and forgiveness, the promotion of common good, the consolidation of the rule of law and responsible citizenship.

Fafali was convinced that with the right accompaniment the people can learn to craft a peaceful society on their own. Voz di Paz helped to establish permanent spaces for dialogue in each region of Guinea-Bissau. These places offer an opportunity to the local population to dialogue around the concerns for peace in their communities in order to find solutions. Another demonstration of Fafali's holistic approach to fostering peace is his personal pursuit of "green peace", encouraging the members of the regional space of dialogue and the Voz di Paz team to plant a tree, which would one day host the dialogue sessions in the shade of its leaves.

Through Voz di Paz, Fafali also collaborated with a large network of radio stations all over the country in order to reach the entire population with educational programmes about key issues that were on the minds of Bissau-Guineans. His regular radio programme made him known across Guinea-Bissau as a voice of peace. Just like his other initiatives, his journalistic activities were fuelled by the desire to bring peace to the people of Guinea-Bissau.

At the same time, Fafali always remained humble. He was aware of the limits of his own role and courageous enough to persevere nonetheless. Despite dealing with complex issues and operating in difficult circumstances his optimism never wavered. He is remembered among his colleagues and friends not only for his outstanding analytical skills but also for his big and genuine smile. Fafali brought a sense of humour that charmed us all into keeping his faith that things could change and - with enough effort and determination - would change for the better.

In recognition of the mark he left on Guinea-Bissau, he was posthumously granted the Bissau-Guinean nationality.

Having had the chance to meet, work and appreciate Fafali we can only agree with the wish expressed by the young son of one of our colleagues: "There should be more Fafalis in this world."

Fafali passed away on 23 January 2015.

Interpeace, along with its partners in West Africa – Indigo in Côte d'Ivoire, IMRAP in Mali and P4DP in Liberia, express its deepest sympathy to Fafali's family, colleagues and friends.

Hommage à Fafali Koudawo

"Fafali était une personne inspirante et un véritable artisan de la paix, plein de sagesse et d'humilité.
