Interpeace and its Ivorian partner, the Initiative Dialogue and Action Research for Peace (Indigo), have launched a study involving young people in urban areas from Abobo, Yopougon and Treichville in Abidjan. This process of participatory and inclusive dialogue aims to identify and understand the urban dynamics of violence in urban centers, particularly in the pre-electoral context of C\u00f4te d'Ivoire. The socio-political situation in C\u00f4te d'Ivoire remains fragile and election periods are carriers of significant risks because the different political groups tend to lead young people to violently contest the electoral outcome.<\/p>\n

The six months study, funded by the United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF)<\/a> and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will involve 600 representatives from Abobo, Yopougon and Treichville. 400 of these representatives will be young people. Through the study, Indigo aims to provide an opportunity for youth to express their views on the factors that divide their society as well as those that enhance social cohesion. Indigo hopes to boost the self-esteem of young people by establishing an open and neutral framework for interaction. As such, young people can not only explore their potential as agents of peace, but also as agents of change with the ability to shape the history of their own country in this pre-election period.<\/p>\n

Christina De Bruin, the UNICEF Deputy Representative in C\u00f4te d'Ivoire, thinks that \"the study will help to assess the capacity of youth to contribute to the prevention and resolution of conflicts on the one hand and on the other hand, strengthen social cohesion within their communities (...) so that they can be actors of peace in C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ownership of inclusive dialogue is at the heart of change<\/strong><\/p>\n

Indigo and Interpeace\u2019s work in Abidjan is based on inclusiveness and ownership. For both institutions, peacebuilding requires a change of attitude. To do this, people must listen to each other and engage in meaningful dialogue and not just in a simple conversation. \"It is only when trust is established between people that they can truly have a dialogue and not a chat,\" says Dr. Severin Kouam\u00e9, the General Coordinator of Indigo.<\/p>\n

If the future of a country lies in its youth, it is obvious that we must invest in it in order to generate long-term profound transformations. To illustrate this conviction, Dr. Kouam\u00e9 explains that \"the change we wish to see through this study is the ability to capitalize on the potential of youth so that they can own the process of inclusive and participatory dialogue and in the end, manage it themselves.\"<\/p>\n

Jerry McCann, Deputy-Director General, Operations at Interpeace, added to Dr. Kouam\u00e9's words by saying that \"ownership is above all the question of who makes the decisions in a society. It is the Ivorians who should decide on the future of their country by making suitable recommendations to improve social cohesion in their society.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sustainable peace deserves a long-term investment<\/strong><\/p>\n

The presentation of the objectives and expected outcomes of the study generated a lot of interest from the audience. The importance of investing in long-term peacebuilding initiatives was highlighted by participants, including financial partners.<\/p>\n

Interpeace et Indigo lancent la Recherche participative en milieu urbain pour soutenir des \u00e9lections pacifiques en C\u00f4te d'Ivoire<\/strong><\/p>\n

Le 11 d\u00e9cembre 2014, Interpeace et son partenaire ivoirien, l\u2019Initiative de Dialogue et Recherche Action pour la Paix (Indigo) ont lanc\u00e9 une \u00e9tude engageant les jeunes en milieu urbain dans les communes d\u2019Abobo, Yopougon et Treichville \u00e0 Abidjan. Ce processus de dialogue participatif et inclusif vise \u00e0 identifier et comprendre les dynamiques de violence urbaines dans le cadre du contexte pr\u00e9-\u00e9lectoral de la C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire. La situation socio-politique en C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire reste en effet fragile, les p\u00e9riodes \u00e9lectorales sont porteuses de risques importants, les diff\u00e9rents groupes politiques ayant tendance \u00e0 entrainer des jeunes \u00e0 revendiquer ou contester de mani\u00e8re violente une issue \u00e9lectorale.<\/p>\n

L\u2019\u00e9tude d\u2019une dur\u00e9e de six mois, qui b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie de l\u2019appui financier du Fonds des Nations Unies pour l\u2019Enfance (UNICEF)<\/a> et du Programme des Nations Unies pour le D\u00e9veloppement (PNUD),\u00a0 impliquera 600 repr\u00e9sentants desdites communes dont 400 jeunes. A travers l\u2019\u00e9tude, Indigo entend offrir une opportunit\u00e9 aux jeunes d\u2019exprimer leurs opinions sur les facteurs de division et de coh\u00e9sion sociale. Indigo esp\u00e8re\u00a0 renforcer l\u2019estime que les jeunes ont d\u2019eux-m\u00eames en \u00e9tablissant un cadre d\u2019\u00e9change ouvert et neutre. Par cela les jeunes pourraient non seulement explorer leur potentiel en tant qu\u2019acteurs de paix,\u00a0 mais \u00e9galement\u00a0 en tant qu\u2019acteurs\u00a0 de changement ayant la possibilit\u00e9 de fa\u00e7onner l\u2019histoire de leur propre pays dans cette p\u00e9riode pr\u00e9-\u00e9lectorale.<\/p>\n

Pour Christina De Bruin, la Repr\u00e9sentante Adjointe d\u2019Unicef en C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, \u00ab l\u2019\u00e9tude devra aider \u00e0 appr\u00e9cier les capacit\u00e9s des jeunes \u00e0 contribuer \u00e0 la pr\u00e9vention et la r\u00e9solution des conflits d\u2019une part, et d\u2019autre part, au renforcement de la coh\u00e9sion sociale au sein de leurs communaut\u00e9s respectives (\u2026) ainsi ils seront des acteurs de la paix en C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire. \u00bb<\/p>\n

L\u2019appropriation du dialogue inclusif au c\u0153ur du changement<\/strong><\/p>\n

Le processus que proposent Indigo et Interpeace pour l\u2019\u00e9tude \u00e0 Abidjan se base sur les notions d\u2019inclusivit\u00e9 et d\u2019appropriation. Pour ces deux institutions, la consolidation de la paix passe par un changement d\u2019attitude. Pour ce faire, il faut savoir s\u2019\u00e9couter et \u00e9tablir un v\u00e9ritable dialogue et non pas une simple conversation entre des personnes. \u00ab C\u2019est seulement quand la confiance est install\u00e9e entre les personnes que l\u2019on peut v\u00e9ritablement avoir un dialogue et non pas une causette, \u00bb indique Dr. S\u00e9verin Kouam\u00e9, le Coordinateur G\u00e9n\u00e9ral d\u2019Indigo.<\/p>\n

Si le futur d\u2019un pays r\u00e9side dans sa jeunesse, il va de soi qu\u2019il faut s\u2019appuyer sur elle afin d\u2019engendrer des transformations profondes \u00e0 long terme. Pour illustrer cette conviction, Dr. Kouam\u00e9 explique que \u00ab le changement que nous (Indigo) souhaitons voir \u00e0 travers cette \u00e9tude, c\u2019est la valorisation du potentiel des jeunes pour qu\u2019ils puissent s\u2019approprier le processus de dialogue inclusif et participatif et qu\u2019au final, ils puissent le piloter eux-m\u00eames. \u00bb<\/p>\n
