Last year, Mali experienced the most significant political and security crisis since its independence. This highlighted the fragility of the main state institutions, but also the existence of deep divisions and tensions in Malian society. Through this initiative, Interpeace and its partner aim to renew a sense of trust and cohesion among Malians and to build a common vision on a shared future.

In its first phase, the initiative will conduct consultations across all 8 regions of Mali and refugee camps to find out what Malians think are the main challenges to peace and also identify the sources of resilience. The initiative will work with the grassroots, civil society and government to bring the needs and aspirations of ordinary people to the attention of decision-makers. It will enable Malians to play in role in defining the future of their country.

Scott M. Weber, Director-General of Interpeace explained: “We have heard Malians express their desire to tackle the root causes of the tensions that led to the eruption of violence in 2012 rather than simply treat the symptoms. Together with our trusted partner IMRAP, we will accompany the Malian authorities and people in their effort to re-stitch the social fabric between and within divided communities, including those who feel disenfranchised by the state. Trust must be the bedrock upon which the people of Mali will build a stable and peaceful future."

Progress to date

Over the past two months the skills of the IMRAP team have been enhanced to conduct consultations across the country. This has included training in peacebuilding techniques and methods, facilitation training and how to lead focus groups and dialogue sessions. In addition, they learned how video clips and recorded sound bites can be used to stimulate dialogue.

IMRAP has developed a detailed plan to conduct 100 focus group discussions over the course of 2014 in all 8 regions of the country and refugee camps in neighbouring countries. IMRAP has also developed a strategy in order for it to reach out to remote and conflict affected regions of Mali, given its size. IMRAP will create a network of local facilitators that can conduct dialogue sessions. In each region, IMRAP will consult with people from all walks of life to listen to what people think on the obstacles to peace.

Néné Konaté, Director of IMRAP, explained: "These trainings are a great opportunity for the programme. We can't wait to go out and listen to what Malians have to say. Ultimately we must support all parts of Malian society. Our goal is that Malians can trust their institutions again and decide themselves how they want to achieve this."

IMRAP – Interpeace's partner in Mali

IMRAP recently held its first General Assembly in Bamako. The General Assembly is made up of a group of prominent Malians. They will provide advice and support for the peacebuilding process. Scott M. Weber, the Director General of Interpeace attended this milestone event that marks the official creation of IMRAP.
