Promoting Youth Leadership and Participation to foster Peace and Social Cohesion in Guinea-Bissau (2021 – 2022)
Building on the experience maturated on women promotion in decision making, Interpeace launched the initiative “No Ianda Djuntu: Drawing the Pathway Together” aimed to empower youth to play a central role in advancing democratic participation and peacebuilding in Guinea-Bissau. By encouraging reflection on the involvement of young people in decision-making processes, strengthening their capacity to influence public decision-making bodies, and increasing their self-confidence to promote new models of leadership, the project contributed to catalyze significant change at the individual level. Implemented in all regions of the country, the project allowed to facilitate the effective inclusion of young men and women at the community and local institutions level promoting their meaningful participation.
Renforcement de la gouvernance de la justice et soutien aux efforts nationaux de réforme de la justice (2018 - 2020)
Through this initiative, Interpeace aimed to enhance justice governance by increasing citizens’ engagement in political dialogues related to justice. To do so, the initiative worked to enhance the capacity of civil society organizations to assess local justice governance through a mix method participatory Justice Barometer (“Sintidu di Justisa: Sense of justice”). Based on the results of the study, Interpeace supported the efforts of citizens and civil society organizations to conduct dialogues with local and national public institutions.
In addition, in the framework of the efforts made towards the Justice reform in Guinea-Bissau, Interpeace supported national and international institutions to identify entry points for the integration of formal and traditional justice. Through the study “No Obi Mindjer ku Mininu: We heard women and children” Interpeace formulated clear recommendations to make traditional justice more inclusive. This, in turn, enhanced citizens’ access to justice while strengthening coordination and capacities within both formal and informal justice systems.
Promoting Women’s Political Participation in Guinea-Bissau to Work for Peace (2017- 2020)
This two-phase initiative aimed to reduce women’s exclusion from decision-making in Guinea-Bissau, focusing on governance and conflict management. In the initial stage, the initiative aimed to identify barriers preventing women’s participation in spheres of power, leading to the report “Fala di Mindjer: Women talk”. Following up on these results, Interpeace developed a national awareness campaign and provided capacity-building and support for women leaders.
In a second phase,”No sta djuntos!: We are together!” Interpeace addressed resistance uncovered in the first phase to reduce tensions related to female leadership promotion and transform women’s roles in politics, civil society, and the Defense and Security Forces. This involved raising awareness among men, women, and civil society organizations about the potential unintended negative consequences of excluding women. It resulted in a better understanding of how women’s integration impacts social cohesion, thereby contributing to strengthening peace consolidation in Guinea-Bissau.
