Liberia

Over the past 25 years, recurring conflict in Liberia has led to the destruction of its physical infrastructure, the pillaging of its key national resources, and the collapse of its political institutions.

In 2003, the civil war finally ended with opposing sides signing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in Accra. The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) then stepped in to maintain the peace. In 2005, free elections saw Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf voted President. She was not only the first female elected president in Africa, but since then has focused her government’s efforts on stabilizing the country and putting it firmly on the development path.
