Political Transitions in North Africa and Beyond

28 November 2011 - Scott M. Weber, Director-General of Interpeace will be on the opening panel at the Annual Meeting of the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform, which will take place on Friday, 2 December 2011. He will be joined on the panel by Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva and Ralf Heckner, Deputy Head of the Political Division III at the United Nations and other International Organizations and the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.

The Annual Meeting of the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform will be looking at the potential contributions of the peacebuilding community to the political transitions in Africa and the Middle East.

With many of these transitions entering into a consolidation phase after periods of rapid change, the question of managing long term transformation processes within states and societies is becoming ever more important. It is at this critical juncture where revolutions are translated into transformations that the peacebuilding community has an important contribution to make.

Bernardo Arevelo de Leon, a Senior Advisor, at Interpeace will be on the second panel ‘From political settlement to building peace’. The panel includes Gerard McHugh, the President of Conflict Dynamics International, Andy Carl, the director of Conciliation Resources and Pascal Da Rocha who is the Deputy Director of the Mediation and Intervention Unit at the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD).
